Mechanism of action:
• Acebrophylline is a drug consisting of its components theophylline 7-acetate and ambroxol which has been found to act as a bronchodilator, mucoregulator and anti-inflammatory agent.

• N-acetylcysteine (NAC), an antioxidant containing thiol groups, is a form of amino-acid cysteine, which is widely used as mucolytic agent and antioxidant

The viscosity of pulmonary mucus secretions depends upon the concentrations of mucoprotein, which increases with increasing purulence owing to the presence of cellular debris. The mucolytic action of N-acetylcysteine is related to the sulfhydryl group in the molecule. The sulfhydryl group "breaks" the disulphide linkages in the mucus thereby lowering the viscosity and increasing mucociliary clearance.
